Book Review 6: The Gentleman From Peru by Andre Aciman

Hey, what’s up?

I haven’t written a book review in ages—I might have even forgotten how to write one. But I’ll try my best for this post!

I read this book about a month ago, and it was so good. The title is The Gentleman from Peru by André Aciman. This is one of those books that you buy randomly but turn out to be a hidden gem. (It was one of those “buy one and get another for half price” deals.) The book is only about 160-ish pages, so you could easily finish it in a day, but I took my time since I was reading it on my working days.

When I saw this book on the display shelf at Waterstones, the cover immediately caught my interest. It has a yellow serrated frame, and the title is written in yellow in a signature-like font. The background features a beach with cliffs, and there are many blue-and-white striped umbrellas tilting in the sand. The whole image has a classic film-camera aesthetic. (Sorry, this is just me practicing describing something in detail for personal reasons.)

For some reason, when I bought the book, I didn’t notice the sticker that said, “From the author of Call Me by Your Name.” If I’m not mistaken, they made a movie from that book, and possibly Timothée Chalamet was the actor. (Correct me if I’m wrong!)

I would rate this book 10/10. I hope I don’t spoil too much, but I think the author believes in the idea of soulmates and reincarnation. The premise revolves around a man who is reincarnated repeatedly but never at the right time to be with his soulmate. In this book, the woman he loves is much younger than him, making their relationship impossible. Honestly, I’m not sure if I’m explaining it correctly because it’s difficult to put into words! But one phrase that really stuck with me was: “He’d waited a lifetime to hear her say it.” I nearly cried—but I’m a gentleman, so I didn’t!

Sorry, no quotes from the book this time, even though there are quite a few worth mentioning. I’m just too lazy to flip through the pages again.

That’s about it for this book review. If you read the book, let me know your thoughts! I hope you enjoyed this review. See you in my next post!
