Book Review 13: When I was a Kid 7 by Boy

Hey, what’s up?

I recently read a book titled When I Was A Kid 7 by Boey. It feels very much like a diary, but one filled with childish drawings. Each illustration comes with a short description, giving context to the moment or memory being shared.

This is the seventh book in the series, though I haven’t read the earlier ones. I picked this up simply because it was the only copy available at the bookstore nearest to my house, no regrets there.

I’d rate the book a solid 8/10. It focuses on the author’s primary school years, and many of the stories feel personal yet light hearted. Boey grew up in Johor, Malaysia, and attended school in Singapore, which adds an interesting layer to the experiences he shares. The book touches on everyday moments such as school life, home, the playground, and bus rides, all told with humour and a child’s logic that feels oddly familiar.

What I really enjoyed was how unique the book felt. Some of the thoughts and beliefs he had as a kid resonated with me more than I expected, bringing back memories of my own childhood reasoning. There’s something comforting and nostalgic about that.

I’d definitely love to return to Malaysia someday to hunt down the rest of the series. This book feels original, honest, and charming in its own quiet way, and I’d happily recommend it to others.

It’s a short review this time, but I hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you in my next post!
