Book Review 17: Every Day I Read by Hwang Bo-Reum

Hey, what’s up?

So I picked up another Japanese read recently and ended up finishing it while waiting for my car’s annual service. Truthfully, I bought it on a whim because the cover was so eye catching. I did not even get to read the synopsis since it was tucked behind the front cover, and the whole book was wrapped in plastic. Excuses aside, the book is Every Day I Read by Hwang Bo-reum, translated by Shanna Tan.

I would rate it a 6 out of 10. At first, I assumed it was fiction because of the playful and animated cover, but that turned out not to be the case. It is actually a nonfiction collection of personal reflections, where the author shares her thoughts and experiences with reading. She is clearly someone who loves books deeply, a true bibliophile.

Throughout the book, she talks about how her relationship with reading developed over time, from family influences to exploring different genres. She also describes activities like buddy reading and attending book club style gatherings where people exchange ideas and perspectives. The book is divided into around fifty short chapters, each offering a glimpse into her thoughts about books and reading.

I can see the appeal, and it was interesting to step into the mind of someone so passionate about reading. That said, it was not quite my cup of tea, which explains the modest rating. However, I have to give credit where it is due. The cover illustration is absolutely stunning and easily a ten out of ten.

This will be a shorter review since there were not many original quotes that stood out to me. Much of what she shared referenced other books, and personally, I feel it is only fair to explore those works firsthand before borrowing their words.

Adieu.
